Ultrasound Imaging and Therapeutics Research Laboratory

Open Positions

We are currently seeking talented, enthusiastic individuals to fulfill the positions below:

Senior Research Scientist

The Senior Research Scientist will identify, propose and execute new strategies and initiatives that are critical to the mission of the laboratory and develop and guide laboratory, institution-wide and inter-institutional collaborative studies. The Senior Research Scientist will establish new scientific and technical directions resulting in new fields of study. This individual will provide technical and scientific oversight to the operation of a research laboratory consisting of wet chemistry, cell culture, instrumentation, and in-vitro/preclinical/clinical imaging facilities. The Senior Research Scientist will interact on a consistent basis with graduate students and other researchers, provide intensive mentoring and training of research staff, and report to the Principal Investigator.

Qualifications: 

  • Ph.D. in engineering or science (biomedical, electrical, or mechanical engineering, physics, chemistry, or biophysics are preferred)
  • Five or more years of experience in laboratory research (or equivalent)
  • Previous project management experience in a research setting
  • Full technical ability to interpret, organize, execute, and coordinate research projects

Ability to act independently on technical matters pertaining to projects and laboratory

  • Research with substantial scientific, translational or clinical impact, and development of related intellectual property
  • Exhibiting creativity, foresight and mature judgment in conducting research programs and projects

Responsibilities/Duties: 

  • Conceive, plan, and conduct individual research in broad areas relevant to the mission of the laboratory (imaging, therapy and contrast/therapeutic agents)
  • Serve as the technical lead for the laboratory in your area of expertise
  • Plan and direct a number of collaborative research projects including coordination of research activities between groups and disciplines
  • Develop new instruments, materials, processes, scientific methods, approaches and algorithms
  • Responsible for directing others; plans, organizes, and supervises the work of laboratory scientists, engineers, and technicians. Evaluate progress and results obtained, recommend major changes to achieve overall objectives
  • Participate in strategic planning; key role in identifying and acquiring research funding
  • Review schedules, cost and documentation to ensure success of projects.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Laboratory Manager / Research Technician

This position will require the individual to conduct laboratory studies, oversee and participate in laboratory, institution-wide and inter-institutional studies, support on-going and future lab needs, and apply creativity in troubleshooting and developing new techniques to customize science and clinical research projects. A successful candidate will be self-motivated, highly organized, able to work independently and with other lab members, and have a scientific background and extensive research experience (with an emphasis on synthetic chemistry, nanoparticles, cell and tissue culture, and imaging and analysis techniques). This individual will provide functional oversight to the operation of a large research laboratory consisting of a wet lab, optical lab, cell culture facility, and imaging rooms. The lab manager will interact on a consistent basis with researchers, staff, students, and vendors/suppliers, and report to the Principal Investigator.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a scientific discipline (i.e. biology, chemistry, biophysics, engineering)
  • Experience: Prior lab experience (over 2 years of full time experience preferred)

Responsibilities/Duties: 

  • Assist and participate in a variety of novel research projects
  • Develop and implement laboratory policy and procedures
  • Perform synthesis of materials (e.g., plasmonic nanoparticles, perfluorocarbon droplets) needed for various research projects within the lab
  • Manage lab inventory including purchase of supplies and equipment and maintenance of related records.
  • Maintain lab instrumentation and equipment, including calibration
  • Coordinate scheduling of lab usage and direct the scheduling and work of student assistants assigned to laboratory
  • Manage all aspects of tissue culture, including establishment and maintenance of cell line database, cell culture, propagation and storage of all cell lines, and ensure use of proper protocols
  • Maintain laboratory facility in safe, clean and organized manner, including the maintenance of safety training records, chemical inventory upkeep, as well as MSDS records
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Skills:

  • Working knowledge of research laboratory operation to include equipment calibration and maintenance, laboratory processes and procedures and lab safety rules and practices
  • Ability and attention to detail in communication, customer service, work guidance and instruction

Post-Doctoral Research Fellows and Graduate Student Research Assistants

The lab is currently seeking post-doctoral fellows and graduate students looking to solve problems and answer questions in the broad areas of biomedical, electrical and mechanical engineering. The group consists of a wide range of educational backgrounds pursuing a variety of projects. Whether you are seeking a degree in biomedical or electrical engineering, physics, mechanical engineering, chemistry or another scientific field, the lab group is always looking for bright young minds.

Additionally, undergraduate students looking for exposure to an academic research environment are encouraged to inquire. The breadth of topics covered in the group’s research makes it easy to find a niche, and experience in a laboratory setting is valuable for transitioning into graduate education or industrial research.
